The Shields Family

The Shields Family

Monday was supposed to be a scorcher.  The forecast said a high of 90.  If the high gets much above 80, I start to internally complain.  When the high reaches 90, those internal complaints become pretty external.  Fortunately, however, I don’t believe it reached 90 in our neighborhood.  Even still, for the first time (that I remember anyway), I sported shorts to a portrait session because I knew I would do some running after three adorable kids, and I didn’t want to be a sweaty mess. Thoughts on Giving

Apr 19, 2012 By Rae in Personal Comments Off Tags: thoughts

If you have read even a week’s worth of blog posts from me, you know that Chris and I are finally debt free, except our house in New York that just won’t go away.  I haven’t written much about getting out of debt and what that entailed, and really, that isn’t for today’s post.  But, prior to making the commitment to getting out of debt, we were giving 10% and saving 10% of everything we made.  It hit us one day that that 20% was hindering us from making any significant progress in our attempts to get debt free.  So, we stopped giving and saving for nearly 2 years.  Or, at least, on paper that’s what we did.  Money obviously isn’t the only way you can give. Ellen – 11 Month Portraits

I know I pretty much say this every month, but it is pretty hard for me to believe that Ellen will be a year old in less than a month.  She is becoming much more of a toddler than a baby.  My sweet, calm, content baby is now eager to be on the move all the time and does NOT want to be stopped from her goal… whatever that is at that moment.  I would be kidding myself if I said I didn’t know this day would come… the day when she would be so super active and unstoppable (not to mention strong willed).  I called it when I was pregnant and Ellen was about twice as active as Claire was.  Unlike Claire (who kicked constantly as a baby, even in her sleep), Ellen has been pretty chill and still.  … until now!  Up until today, she wouldn’t crawl on the grass, but now that she’s been on it more than a handful of times since she’s started crawling, she’s over that and ready to crawl everywhere.  Of course, when I took her portraits, I was hoping she would crawl some for the camera, but no luck.  Anyway… happy viewing, friends! Tuesday Tips – Workflow

Apr 17, 2012 By Rae in For Photographers 1 Comment Tags: Tuesday Tips

I have fought this post.  I mean, I have really fought it.  In fact, this is the first time this month that I have less than 12 hours before I want this post to go live, and I am JUST now writing it.  It isn’t that I don’t want to share.  I have spent countless hours writing DETAILED emails to random photographers over the course of the last 6ish years explaining my different techniques, which someone in this house thinks I should have had a form email reply as I really did take too much work time to answer them.  I care not who knows, as I don’t think that there is any magic pill or formula that will make a clone of me.  (If there was, I would do it right now and have a free photographer photograph me with my family!)  No, it isn’t a matter of keeping a “secret recipe” a secret.  Instead, it is more of a hesitation about announcing to the public that I have received countless emails asking me what I do to my images to get them the way they look… because, to me, making such an announcement is somehow making me into a quintessential conceited photographer that assumes everyone wants to be like me.  Alright, now that you know I don’t think that… and now that you know I have hesitated for just this reason… here it goes!  My workflow… Read more

Fostering Creativity… accidentally

Fostering Creativity… accidentally

Last Wednesday, Claire and I did not spend the morning together… between my Bible study and her ballet/gymnastics class, we just didn’t get any quality time that morning.  We weren’t home from 8:45am through 1:10pm, which meant rushing to nap time for Ellen and room time for Claire so that no one had a severe meltdown.  There was just one problem with that: Claire doesn’t rush to do anything… ever.  Well, okay, maybe if there is chocolate or TV involved, she might rush to get those, but otherwise, no rushing… ever.  The rushing combined with the lack of quality time that morning lead to the scene I am about to describe.
